Tres libros de la editorial, apilados sobre la mesa
How it works

How an interactive book is made

Four steps, one contact person on your side and a technical spec agreed before anything goes to press.

The commission

Two pieces designed at the same time

The book and its website are not made separately. From the outline on, we decide what belongs in print — what lasts for years and is read sitting down — and what belongs behind the code: what moves, what sounds, what changes or what simply takes up too much room. A book with codes bolted on at the end is a different thing, and it shows.

The result is yours: the edition, the press files and the website, on your own domain if you want one. You can reprint whenever you like without paying for the design again.

Outline and map of codes

We settle what the book tells and what the website tells. Out of that comes the map of codes: how many there are, on which pages, and what each one opens.

Words, pictures and layout

We write or edit the texts, work the photographs and lay out the whole book. You review it page by page before anything moves on.

The website and the codes

We build the website with the films, the 360-degree views, the games or whatever it takes, and generate the final codes. They are tested by scanning for real, with the PDF in hand.

Printed on FSC-certified paper and delivered wherever you say. The website goes live the same day the book leaves the press.

FAQ

No. Phone cameras have read QR codes for years, on Android and on iPhone: you point and the link appears. What opens is an ordinary web page, so it works the same on a phone from 2019 as on a new one, with nothing to download and no account to create. That is the difference between a book people use and one they don't.

You change it on the website and the printed codes still lead to the right place. A code does not point at a film: it points at an address of yours, and behind that address we put whatever is needed at the time. That is how a corporate book can carry this year's report without reprinting the whole run.

It reads perfectly well. That is the rule we write by: the paper stands on its own and the code always adds, never completes. A book with half the story behind a QR is a broken book, and the books people read on a plane or up a mountain are exactly ours.

It depends on what you have. If footage already exists, we edit it and prepare it to load fast on a phone. If it doesn't, we produce it: filming, 360-degree capture, voice-over and music. This is the line that varies most from one quote to another, so it is worth discussing on day one.

Five hundred for children's and corporate books; for destination books we usually start at a thousand, because the cost of the edition spreads better. Below that the price per copy climbs and the project stops making sense next to a PDF. If the run is small but the book will last for years, talk to us and we'll look at it.
